A ranch and barn in the Western Catskills, New York, now complete — finished, furnished and lived in.

Before anything inside was changed, there was the house itself — low, long, and quietly settled into its clearing. The gallery closes with the house as we first came to understand it, in a study from the drive: with its long standing-seam roof and clapboard walls, a deep covered porch held in shade, a gravel drive edged with stone-bordered beds of hosta and perennials, and the woods drawn close behind.
